DISAPPOINTMENT. Tourist trap - don't go. Marketed on some sites as a Michelin Star restaurant, and having a 'reputation' of being 136years old serving Kansai style sukiyaki, I was excited to take my mother there for her 70th birthday. The fact that they insisted I call again upon landing in Japan to reconfirm my reservation made it sound like a popular sukiyaki joint. The staff over the phone didn't speak English either, so you'd assume it was 'authentic Japanese'.
Alas, we had a funny gut feeling upon arrival - we were taken to an empty room in the back where we had the whole place to ourselves. Our server told us it was a minimum order of one ¥10,000set per person. At ¥40,000 for us four, it was our most expensive meal in Japan, so it'd better be good. WISHFUL THINKING. You don't get what you pay for.
We ordered all 3 dishes on the menu (they only HAVE 3 dishes - Sukiyaki (which is served dry here, not soupy as you probably know sukiyaki to be. The cooked beef and veg is dunked in raw egg before eating), Batayaki (beef cooked in butter, which amounted to a tasteless mound of meat they make you dip in a sauce of soya sauce + radish (dashi), and Mitzuyaki (beef and veg cooked in tasteless boiling water meant to have kelp flavour, which they insist you dip on ponzu sauce).
The most infuriating dish of all was the ponzu sauce, which was so sour and otherwise tasteless it left a bad taste in my mouth. Being the last dish they prepare, you'd expect it to be a climax to a divine culinary experience of sorts - THINK AGAIN. My stomach was churning within seconds and I had to wash my beef and tofu in clear water before it became edible.
By the end of what was already a regrettable meal, we got served a surprisingly bitter ocha, which made the experience even harder to swallow.
You'd think there'd be dessert included in such a short and unpalatable meal, just to sweeten the deal, but no. We had to decline the dessert menu, having such a bad taste in my mouth, gut and memory.
The kicker was the bill, where they charge you 10% extra, for service. Better yet, they charge you for the sauces separately! The same sauces that made each dish unpalatable (i.e. the raw egg, the dashi+soya sauce combination, and the strange ponzu concoction passed off as a condiment). The best dipping sauce of the 3 was the raw egg, which I could get at 7-Eleven for one-hundredth the price!
We left in a hurry, feeling ripped off and sore from wasting stomach space on this abomanation passed off as a fancy meal. Regretfully, this would be my mum's 70th birthday memory.
TDLR: Don't go there unless you want to feel ripped off, have your expectations sorely unmet and leave hungry.
