Interesting history and unbelievable it was so recent. Has the feel and smell of an old school office block and still an intimidating place. The rooms that are still set up as they were in 1989 were our favourite.

General:
A visit at the stasi HQ where the high staff was posted.

Good:
✓ The exhibition is authentic, you can almost touch the daily life there
✓ It museum is arranged quite orderly, so it easy to understand the context of each room

Bad:
× Really needs audio guide
× There were alot of references to documents in German, but it sort of losing the impact when you are English speaker
× You can barely get the sense of what it was like under stasi rule, some 'interactive' devices could have been use to demonstrate that terror.

The best museum in Berlin. It’s authentic, gives an unique angle on the Cold War, East Germany and Berlin. Easily spend half a day here. Outside the main museum there’s a free outdoor exhibition as well. There’s a €1 charge to take photos inside the museum which is excellent - means you don’t go round with people around you taking endless photos!

Stuffy warm museum, feels like an East German government office ca. 1980... lots of text to read, and the organization of the tour makes more sense if you already have read some background info. Sadly, no english translations seen for documents like the transcripts of conversations of people that were spied on. This is a missed opportunity because they illustrate the human aspect more than most of the info boards (and those are all available in English and German)

A little out the way but worth traveling too. Staff are friendly and it is a very well curated museum on what is a difficult topic. Worth a visit especially if you are interested in cold war history and spies. If you would not have considered visiting this museum then consider going and take a look around it is a very eye opening and informative museum.
